If your facebook ads targeting is off, your results will be too.

Wrong audience.
Wrong spend.
Zero returns.

That’s how most people burn through their budget.

Today I’m breaking down the only three audience types that matter.

The same ones I use every day for client campaigns.
The same ones that actually drive results.
The same ones you can set up today.

The 3 Types of Facebook Ads Targeting

Everything inside Meta falls into three buckets.

Core audiences.
Custom audiences.
Lookalike audiences.

That’s it.

No secret category.
No hidden targeting trick.
Just these three.

But remember, the best targeting won’t save weak creative.

So make sure you are keeping your creative fresh.

And when you understand how to use them properly, your campaigns get a whole lot easier.

Core Audience

Interest and behaviour based targeting

This is the simplest audience you can create.

You choose what people are into.
You choose what they do.
Meta finds them.

Example time.

Say you run a landscaping business.
You’d target things like home maintenance, gardening, outdoor services.

If you sell fitness apparel, you’d target people interested in exercise or people who shop online often.

Simple.
But don’t overcomplicate it. And don’t stack too many interest groups.

Custom Audience

Retarget people who already know you

Most people won’t buy the first time they see your ad.

They’re scrolling.
Comparing.
Thinking.
Waiting.

Depending on your industry, that decision might take days.
Or weeks.
Or months.

That’s where custom audiences come in.

These are your warm people.
Your interested people.
Your familiar faces.

Website visitors.
Instagram engagers.
Past customers.
Leads who never converted.

These people already know who you are.
Your job is to remind them why they were interested in the first place.

Example:

Someone visits your website but doesn’t buy.

Retarget them with:
A testimonial ad to build trust.
A limited-time offer to push urgency.

Just make sure you exclude existing customers, so you’re not paying for pointless impressions.

Lookalike Audience

Scale with AI-powered targeting

If core audiences find people based on interests…
And custom audiences retarget people who know you…

Lookalikes do something smarter.

They find new people who behave like your best customers.

You give Meta your source audience.
Meta builds a new cold audience that mirrors them.

Example:

Upload a list of your highest-value customers.
Tell Meta to go find more people who look like them.
Meta does the heavy lifting.

Don’t have customers yet?

Use website visitors, leads, or people who engaged with your account.

Just start somewhere.
Lookalikes are one of Meta’s strongest scaling tools.

Quick Recap

Core audiences → Great for finding brand new people
Custom audiences → Best for retargeting warm audiences
Lookalikes → Perfect for scaling when you’re ready for volume

These three do all the work.
