Every Google Ads agency in Brisbane says the same thing.
“Award-winning.”
“Brisbane’s #1.”
“Performance-driven.”
It’s all marketing language.
The truth is, plenty of Brisbane agencies are average. A few are genuinely good. And some will burn through your budget for six months while sending you reports full of impressions and clicks instead of leads and revenue.
This post walks through how to actually pick a Google Ads agency in Brisbane. What to look for, what to ask, what to avoid, and whether you even need one yet.
Written from the agency side of the table, not the marketing side.
First question: do you actually need an agency?
Before you sign anything, be honest with yourself.
A Google Ads agency makes sense when:
You’re spending more than $2,000 a month on ads.
You don’t have an in-house marketer running campaigns.
You’ve tried DIY and the results aren’t there.
You don’t have the time to learn the platform properly.
A Google Ads agency does not make sense when:
Your monthly ad budget is under $1,500.
Your offer hasn’t been validated yet.
You’re expecting an agency to fix a broken business model.
Below $1,500 a month, agency fees eat too much of your spend for the maths to work.
You’ll get more out of running ads yourself for six months until your spend grows.
If you’re not sure your account is even the problem, our piece on why Google Ads get expensive and how to stop it covers the most common issues, most of which are fixable without an agency.
What a good Google Ads agency in Brisbane actually does
Strip away the marketing language and a Google Ads agency does six things.
Strategy.
Decides which campaign types to run, against which keywords, at what budget split.
Build.
Sets up campaigns, keyword research, ad groups, conversion tracking, and audience targeting.
Ad copy.
Writes the headlines, descriptions, and ad extensions that actually drive clicks.
Landing pages.
Either builds them, audits them, or works with your team to lift conversion rates.
Management.
Monitors search terms, adds negative keywords, adjusts bids, refreshes ads, and reallocates budget.
Reporting.
Tells you what worked, what didn’t, what’s planned for next month, and what it means for your business.
If an agency is missing any of these (especially conversion tracking and proper search term work), they’re not a full-service Google Ads agency. They’re button-pushers with a sales pitch.
How much a Google Ads agency in Brisbane costs
Pricing in the Brisbane market falls into three brackets.
$500 to $1,000 a month
Freelance or junior pricing.
Some are genuinely talented and just starting out. Most are inexperienced or running ads on autopilot using Google’s recommendations as their entire strategy.
At this price point, expect basic campaign management. Don’t expect strategy or creative.
$1,500 to $3,000 a month
The Brisbane mid-market.
This is where most small-to-mid Brisbane businesses should be looking.
Boutique agencies, experienced freelancers, and small specialist teams sit here.
Expect proper strategy, build, ongoing management, and reporting. Creative input should be included.
$3,000 to $10,000+ a month
Larger agencies and specialists.
Often priced as a percentage of ad spend (commonly 15 to 25%) or a flat retainer above a certain spend threshold.
For context, our pricing at Ad Partner is the higher of 20% of ad spend or $1,500 a month, which sits us in the mid-market for most clients.
The rule that protects you: the agency fee should never come close to your ad spend.
If you’re spending $4,000 a month on ads and an agency wants $5,000 to manage them, walk away.
Red flags when choosing a Google Ads agency in Brisbane
These are the things that should make you pause.
Guaranteed ROAS or guaranteed leads.
No legitimate agency will guarantee a specific return on ad spend or a fixed number of leads.
Google Ads has too many variables. Anyone guaranteeing outcomes is either lying or planning to cherry-pick easy wins.
No talk of conversion tracking.
If the conversation is all about keywords and ad copy and never about conversion tracking, GA4, or attribution, the agency doesn’t know what they’re doing.
Tracking is the foundation. Without it, optimisation is guesswork.
They own your ad account.
Some agencies set up campaigns inside their own MCC (Manager Account) and won’t release access if you leave.
This is a hard no. You should always own your Google Ads account, your conversion data, and your historical performance.
Long lock-in contracts.
Six and twelve-month contracts with no exit clause are a red flag.
A confident agency lets you leave any time because they know you’ll stay if the work is good.
No mention of search term reports.
Search term reports are how you find wasted spend. If an agency never talks about reviewing search terms, they’re letting Google decide where your budget goes.
They lean heavily on Performance Max as the answer to everything.
PMax has its place, but agencies that push it for every account are usually agencies that don’t want to do the harder work of running and optimising Search campaigns properly.
If you want the deeper read on this, our piece on Performance Max vs Search campaigns explains when each one actually wins.
Questions to ask before you hire a Google Ads agency in Brisbane
Take this list to your shortlist call.
The answers tell you more than any case study.
1. Who exactly will be running my account?
Sales conversations are usually with seniors. Day-to-day work often gets handed to juniors.
Ask who your actual account manager is and how often they touch your account.
2. What does your monthly reporting look like?
Ask for a sample report.
If it’s a list of vanity metrics with no commentary or next steps, that’s the level of insight you’ll get.
3. How do you handle conversion tracking?
If they can’t explain GA4 setup, enhanced conversions, or offline conversion imports for lead businesses, walk away.
4. What’s your approach to search term review?
Weekly? Monthly? Manual? Automated?
The right answer involves a regular cadence and active negative keyword work, not “we let Google handle it.”
5. What happens in the first 30 days?
A good agency has a clear onboarding plan: account audit, conversion tracking review, restructure (if needed), then optimisation.
If they can’t articulate it, they’re winging it.
6. How do you measure success?
The right answer talks about cost per lead, cost per acquisition, and ROAS in the context of your business.
The wrong answer talks about reach, impressions, or click-through rate.
7. What’s your exit policy?
Do you keep the ad account, conversion history, and any landing pages built for you if you leave?
The answer should be yes to all three.
If they hesitate on any of those, move on.
Does the Brisbane factor matter?
Honestly, less than agencies want you to believe.
Google Ads campaigns run remotely. Day-to-day management doesn’t require a local team.
Where local knowledge does matter:
If you’re a local services business (trades, healthcare, real estate, hospitality) targeting Brisbane suburbs, an agency that understands the geography helps. Knowing the difference between Paddington and Fortitude Valley matters when you’re setting location bids.
If you want face-to-face strategy meetings, local matters.
If you need someone in your timezone for fast turnarounds, AEST matters more than physical Brisbane location.
If you’re an e-commerce brand selling Australia-wide or internationally, Brisbane vs Sydney vs Melbourne is mostly irrelevant. The strategy and execution determine results, not the office postcode.
A good Sydney or Gold Coast Google Ads specialist will run your Brisbane account just as well as a Brisbane one. The local angle is mostly marketing, not performance.
How to know if your Google Ads agency is actually working
Three months in, you should be able to answer yes to all of these.
You know exactly what’s running and why.
You’re getting consistent reporting at a defined cadence with commentary, not just numbers.
Cost per lead or cost per acquisition is trending in the right direction.
Search terms are being actively reviewed and negative keywords added regularly.
Ad copy and landing pages are being tested, not running unchanged for months.
You feel informed, not confused.
If any of those are no, the agency is the problem.
For the longer version of this checklist, our piece on how to know if your Google Ads are working breaks down the diagnostic.
When to fire your Google Ads agency
Be specific about the line.
You should fire your Google Ads agency when:
Three months in, results are flat or declining and there’s no clear plan to turn it around.
You’re consistently chasing them for reports or replies.
Ad copy hasn’t been refreshed in two months.
Search terms aren’t being actively managed (you can check this yourself in the account).
They can’t articulate what they tested last month or what they’re testing next.
What you should not do is fire them after one bad month.
Google Ads has natural variance. One slow month after five strong ones isn’t a reason to walk.
How to actually pick the right one
There is no single best Google Ads agency in Brisbane.
There are good ones and bad ones, and the right one depends on your business size, your industry, your budget, and how hands-on you want to be.
The best filter is this:
Talk to two or three agencies.
Ask the questions above.
Pay attention to who answers honestly versus who answers smoothly.
The agency that admits what they don’t know is almost always better than the one with a confident answer for everything.
