Meta Advantage+ Creative Is Changing Your Ads: What to Turn Off

Meta Advantage+ Creative Is Changing Your Ads_ What to Turn Off

You upload one Meta ad.

The audience may see several versions of it.

Meta Advantage+ Creative can resize images, generate backgrounds, create text variations, add overlays, animate static assets and apply music.

Some of those changes are useful.

Some can weaken the exact reason the ad was built the way it was.

The Meta Advantage+ Creative settings inside each ad decide how far those changes go.

The answer is not to turn off every enhancement automatically. It is to know what Meta is changing and decide whether that change supports the message.

What Advantage+ Creative Changes

Advantage+ Creative is Meta’s collection of automated and generative creative features.

Depending on eligibility, campaign type and ad format, Meta can use features such as:

  • Image expansion for different aspect ratios
  • Automatic cropping and visual adjustment
  • Background generation
  • Full image variations
  • Primary-text and headline variations
  • Text overlays and image templates
  • Static-image animation
  • Generated or automatically selected music
  • Format adaptations across placements

Meta uses these variations to personalise the ad based on what it predicts an individual is more likely to respond to.

That sounds useful because manual production for every placement takes time.

The trade-off is control.

Meta’s definition of an improvement is based on predicted performance. It does not fully understand your brand standards, compliance requirements or the strategic reason a visual element was placed in a specific position.

Why Your Published Ad Can Look Different

Advertisers often preview the original asset and assume that is exactly what everyone will see.

It may not be.

Some Advantage+ enhancements can be turned on when Meta predicts they may improve performance. New optimisation tests may also be eligible depending on the account settings.

The delivered version can differ by placement and person.

That can change:

  • Where the subject appears
  • How the background looks
  • Which words appear as primary text or headline
  • Whether text is overlaid on the image
  • Whether a static image moves
  • Whether music is added
  • How the asset fills a vertical placement

You need to review the generated previews, not only the uploaded file.

Meta also reports many delivered creative variations in aggregate. You may not receive a clean performance breakdown for every generated version.

That makes controlled testing more important.

The Main Enhancements to Review

Image Expansion and Cropping

Image expansion uses generative AI to create new pixels so an image fits additional aspect ratios.

This can help a square or landscape image fill Stories and Reels placements.

It can also create strange edges, extend objects incorrectly or move attention away from the main point.

Review:

  • Faces and hands
  • Logos
  • Product edges
  • Text inside the original image
  • Before-and-after layouts
  • Screenshots
  • Lines, buildings and geometric shapes

Automatic cropping is lower risk when the asset has been designed with enough safe space.

It becomes risky when the visual depends on a specific comparison or when important proof sits near the edge.

For a service-business ad with a person in the centre and no embedded text, expansion may be worth testing.

For a detailed testimonial graphic, I would usually create the correct placement sizes manually.

Background and Image Generation

Meta can generate new backgrounds or broader image variations inspired by the original creative.

This can create fast visual diversity.

It can also change the perceived setting of the service or product.

A generated background might make a local business look generic. It may show a room, property, tool, uniform or environment that is not accurate.

That matters when the image is being used as proof.

A real project photo should stay real.

A clinical or regulated service should not appear in an invented setting that could mislead the audience.

I turn this off when authenticity is central to the ad.

Text Generation and Overlays

Text generation can create variations from the original primary text and headline.

Meta may also reposition text between fields or apply overlays and templates to the image.

This is useful when the source copy is clear and the brand has room for variation.

It is risky when:

  • The offer has exact terms
  • A disclaimer is required
  • The headline needs a specific qualifier
  • The ad targets one location
  • The wording distinguishes a premium service from a cheap alternative
  • The copy has been written for a particular awareness level

Review every generated text option.

A technically accurate sentence can still shift the promise.

For example, “Book a free assessment” is not the same as “Get a free treatment plan”. One describes the next step. The other could imply a deliverable the business does not provide.

Animation and Video Generation

Meta can animate a static image and produce movement without an original video asset.

This may help an image attract attention in Reels or Stories.

It can also look artificial or distract from the message.

Use it when the visual is simple and the movement improves comprehension.

Turn it off when the asset already has a deliberate hierarchy, contains screenshots or relies on the audience reading detailed information.

Movement is not automatically creative diversity.

A different animation of the same message is still the same message.

Music

Meta can automatically select music for eligible ad formats and placements.

This can make a static or simple video feel more native to Reels.

It can also create the wrong mood.

A serious healthcare, legal or financial message can feel strange with upbeat music. A premium service can feel cheap when the soundtrack does not match the brand.

Review the preview with sound on.

Do not assume most people will watch silently simply because that was historically common in feed placements.

What I Turn Off by Default

For many service-business accounts, I start by turning off enhancements that materially change the meaning or evidence in the ad.

That often includes:

  • Full image generation
  • Generated backgrounds on real project photos
  • Automatic text overlays on designed creative
  • Text variations where offer wording must stay exact
  • Animation of screenshots or detailed statics
  • Automatic music where tone matters

This is not because automation is always bad.

It is because the campaign should launch with a known message and known creative.

Once the baseline works, automation can be tested against it.

If everything changes at once, you do not know whether the audience responded to your original strategy or Meta’s variation.

What I Often Keep or Test

I am more open to enhancements that adapt the asset without changing the argument.

Examples include:

  • Placement-specific cropping when the preview is clean
  • Image expansion on simple photography with safe spacing
  • Minor brightness or visual adjustments
  • Additional text options that have been reviewed manually
  • Music on creator-style video where the tone fits
  • Static animation where the movement supports the hook

The rule is simple.

Keep the feature when it protects the core message and improves the placement experience.

Turn it off when it changes the promise, proof or brand.

A strong message in a controlled asset is still more important than producing dozens of automated variations.

This is why Meta creative should begin with the audience and angle, not the format. The full process is set out in how to plan Meta ad creative.

How to Review Advantage+ Creative Before Publishing

At the ad level, open the Advantage+ Creative section.

The exact layout can vary by objective and account, but review each available feature individually.

Use this checklist:

  1. Open every enhancement category
  2. Check which options are active
  3. Review the generated previews
  4. Scroll through placements
  5. Read every text variation
  6. Listen to any added music
  7. Check logos, faces and product details
  8. Confirm the offer and location remain accurate
  9. Turn off anything you would not approve manually
  10. Save and preview again before publishing

Do not only review the Facebook Feed preview.

Check Instagram Feed, Stories and Reels. A change that looks fine in one placement can fail in another.

When Automation Is Higher Risk

Be more cautious when the ad includes:

  • Healthcare claims
  • Financial or legal information
  • Housing, employment or credit content
  • Regulated products or services
  • Precise pricing or eligibility terms
  • Before-and-after claims
  • Testimonials
  • Real client results
  • Detailed product specifications
  • Brand assets with strict usage rules

Meta may restrict some generative features for certain regulated categories and markets.

The advertiser still remains responsible for the final ad.

“Meta changed it” is not a useful defence when the delivered version is inaccurate.

How to Test It Properly

Create a controlled comparison.

Use the same audience, offer and core asset.

Version A keeps the approved creative with enhancements off.

Version B enables one selected enhancement or a clearly defined group.

Measure:

  • Cost per lead or sale
  • Qualified lead rate
  • Click-through rate
  • Landing-page conversion rate
  • Comments and feedback
  • Brand or compliance issues

Do not judge only by cheap clicks.

An automated variation can improve engagement while attracting people who misunderstood the offer.

Also remember that Meta may not provide variation-level reporting for every enhancement. Use the A/B testing tools or separate ads when you need a cleaner comparison.

The objective is not maximum automation.

It is better creative performance without losing the reason the ad should work.

If your ads are declining, review the strategic message before turning on more versions. This guide to Meta ad creative angles helps separate a new angle from a cosmetic variation.
